Prevention
The office of Prevention directs its efforts toward prevention by using Substance Abuse Prevention Programs (SAPP) like Botvin’s Life Skills® Training (LST) and Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND). As well as activities that educate middle and high school-aged youth. These are evidence-based curriculums that impact this age range of students. Other SAPP activities include a partnership with Community That Cares Coalition, distributing information packets and educational presentations that are open to the broader community of Pueblo.
LST addresses substance abuse and violence that helps young people make healthy choices. It strengthens their confidence and provides them with the necessary skills to handle challenging situations successfully. LST curriculum has demonstrated the reductions in youth’s use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs. More information about the different modules, research and frequently asked questions about LST can be found at the comprehensive LST website.
The Project Towards No Drug Abuse curriculum due to its highly participatory and interactive design focuses on youth 15 to 18 years old. TND’s modules impact and strengthen factors of motivation TND (attitudes, belief systems, expectations, and desires regarding drug use), as well as life skills, and decision-making. For more wide-ranging and detailed information about the project, please see the Project TND website. The intended population for LST and TND are students ages 15-18 in Districts 60 and 70 schools, and alternative educational settings in Pueblo County.
Crossroads Turning Points, Inc. (CPT) is a strong partner for Communities That Care (CTC), which is a coalition of partner organizations, youth, and community leaders who have a common agenda to improve life conditions for children and youth, with a focus on reducing/preventing youth substance use.
Further, supportive and technical assistance is provided by the Office of Colorado Department Public Health and Environment, which is the office of Prevention’s Grantor.
Our Mission and Vision
The CTP’s Substance Abuse Prevention Program's Mission is to prevent underage alcohol and marijuana use and prevent prescription misuse and abuse by 12- to 25-year-olds, as well as inform parents through parenting classes, on how to best help their children to say yes to a healthy lifestyle, healthy activities and no to drugs and no to a damaging lifestyle.
CTP Substance Abuse Prevention Programs’ vision is to create a place where children, youth, and adults are supported in making healthy choices and bringing substance abuse prevention education, and awareness to the community.
CTP’s mission is to implement SAPP by:
-
Enhance youth skillsets that develop confidence and life skills, increase their ability to handle challenging situations, strengthen their attitudes regarding drug use, and improve decision-making.
-
Increase the community’s knowledge of CTP’ SAPP efforts, as well as other prevention programs throughout the community, and how to access resources and services
-
Increase awareness of Pueblo’s leadership to issues related to underage alcohol & marijuana use
-
Impact the community’s attitude towards acknowledging the reality of the problems and issues of underage alcohol & marijuana use
-
Enhance efforts to identify and cultivate sustainable resources for prevention efforts.
Prevention’s focus is to address substance abuse and adverse decisions making surrounding drug use. Prevention will create a community awareness where young people and adults are educated, encouraged, and supported in making healthy choices, therein decreasing substance abuse.
Applied prevention will enhance a person’s skillsets and develop confidence, increasing their ability to handle challenging situations. Also, increase the community’s knowledge and understanding of the adverse conditions associated with substance abuse. This can be accomplished by enhancing efforts that identify and cultivate sustainable resources, as well as how to access those resources and services.
